Help a Girl Out - Travel Advice

I have a free roundtrip ticket to anywhere in the continental US. I must book it by Feb 25th or lose it.

I'm thinking about just leaving the kid for four or five days and taking off to a city and seeing someplace new. And wandering alone with nothing but my backpack and my camera.

I need advice on where I should go!

  • It'll probably be at end of May.
  • Or maybe late July.
  • Or mid September.
  • I don't like the hot hot heat.
  • I don't like bugs that bite.
  • I don't like really expensive places.
  • I don't like getting shot at.
  • I don't like feeling like I have to drink to have fun.
  • I don't like having to bring 3 outfits per day.
  • I don't like wearing a bathing suit.
  • I don't like mean people.

Any ideas?

Hurry---time is ticking!!!

hollywood? or dallas? or new york? that's so awesome.

  1. I've never been to Seattle or Portland so that's where I would go. But Savannah Georgia might be stunning that time of year.

You should come to NY. There's tons to do here and in May or September it's not hot (July is a crapshoot). No biting bugs, bathing suits or multiple outfit changes necessary. If you stay in the right neighborhoods there is no chance of getting shot. There is no need to drink to have fun. There will be lots to photograph. While it can be expensive, you can definitely do it on the cheap. And I know we have a bad reputation, but most NYers are really nice.

    Just my opinion.

I think Ireland may fit all of those.

Savannah, Georgia is lovely. I like St. Louis also.

I love New York (I'm from there) so there's TONS of stuff to do there but it can border on the expensive side.

I once did a road trip from Texas to California and we stopped in Tombstone Arizona which was SO much fun and driving though New Mexico was GORGEOUS.

I've ALWAYS wanted to go to Antelope Canyon: http://www.navajonationparks.org/htm/antelopecanyon.htm

Napa Valley Wine Country? I bet you could find a nice B&B for cheap with some searching and winery tours are usually fairly cheap plus it's such pretty scenery.

I live in Georgia so I can attest that Savannah is very pretty. There's also St. Simon's Island which is supposed to be really pretty I've never been.

I'll keep brainstorming for you though!

San Francisco, San Diego, Monterey, Lake Tahoe...I'm partial to California.

  1. Colorado -- the Denver/Boulder area. There's lots to do inside and out and the weather is perfect.

NYC baby!! Best vacation ever. I'd recommend the end of May.

p.s. when we visited last summer, we kept remarking how nice everybody was - don't buy into the stereotype of rude New Yorkers.

How about a National Park? :)

  1. I would say Boston, it is so historical with lots of things to do and tons of different kinds of food.
Other than that, I 2nd the Napa Valley, CA idea.
If you have the money... Ireland is DEFINITELY a wonderful trip, but you really need to spend at least 12 days there. (And avoid Northern Ireland - because of the not wanting to be shot part.)
Can't wait to hear about what you picked and see photos.
